Fiber Optic Cable
Also called Optical Fiber, is cable (wire or glass fibre) on which information is transmitted in the form of pulses of light. The fibre is not subject to em (electro magnetic) interference or noise, requires heavy protection and transmits greater amounts information than regular copper wires. Installation of Fibre Optical cables is labor intensive, hence it is not widely available.

Firewall
A set of programs the act to protect a private network. A common method is to screen the IP address of an incoming request and check it against an acceptable database of IP addresses.

Flat File Database
Also referred to as Flat Text files, are regular text documents with regular Human readable text. Often spoken of in the context of databases. Antonym : Binary

Floating point number
A number whose decimal point can be in any position, as opposed to a Fixed point decimal which is always in the same position.
Fixed points : 2.00, 2.12
Floating points : 0.023, 00.23, 002.3

Flush
1). In programming, refers to the flushing or clearing of memory buffers which free up a computer's resources.
2). Pressed up agaisnt one side or another. A Left flsuh would see content touching the left edge of a stage or page.

Footer
Data printed at the bottom of one or more pages or printed documents. A feature commonly developed by programmers to allow users to easily manage the content for multiple pages by editing only one file.

Formmailer
A web script that delivers the user submitted form data to a recipient using email. See our Attachment Mailer script for an actual formmailer that delivers form input as well as file Attachments.

FTP
Acronym for : File Transfer Protocol. The transfer or exchange of files from one computer to another using FTP client software.
